Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) celebrates yesterday's court ruling reaffirming that the Fourteenth Amendment guarantees automatic citizenship to children born on U.S. soil.
Birthright citizenship is a constitutional promise that reflects our nation's enduring commitment to equal protection under the law. As a faith-based organization we believe every person deserves dignity, belonging, and the opportunity to thrive.
"This ruling is deeply meaningful for the families we serve," said Kristyn Peck, LSSNCA CEO. "I think of a colleague who has waited years for her asylum case to be resolved while continuing to work, raise her family, and contribute to her community. Her child was born an American citizen because our Constitution protects that right. That promise should never be taken for granted."
As we continue to provide services to our neighbors whose lives have been disrupted by changing immigration policies, this ruling offers reassurance that the Constitution remains a safeguard for children born in this country.
LSSNCA remains committed to advocating for policies that reflect both our nation's constitutional values and our shared moral responsibility to welcome the stranger, protect families, and ensure every person has the opportunity to thrive.
