Washington, D.C. – Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is deeply alarmed by reports that the administration has signed a presidential determination setting refugee admissions at 7,500 individuals for the fiscal year without Congressional consultation. Equally troubling are reports that the administration plans to continue prioritizing white South Africans over families, children, and individuals already vetted and approved for resettlement in the United States.
“Setting refugee admissions to 7,500 is a moral failure as people of faith and a betrayal of who we are as a nation,” said Kristyn Peck, LSSNCA CEO. “For decades, under both Republican and Democratic administrations, our nation has been a beacon of hope for people seeking safety – regardless of faith, race, or country of origin.”
Since taking office, the Trump administration has issued a series of executive orders and actions aimed at dismantling the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program. As a result, thousands of families, children, and individuals fleeing persecution and war have been denied safety since January. Among them are refugees, who have been vetted by multiple agencies and approved for resettlement in the United States after waiting for years.
“As an organization rooted in faith, we are called to welcome the stranger and serve our neighbors in need,” Peck said. “We urge elected officials and community members who share these values to join us in speaking out. We have a moral and legal obligation to ensure refugees can seek safety in our communities.”
