LSSNCA Mourns the Passing of Congressman Gerry Connolly

Washington, DC – Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) joins the community in mourning the passing of U.S. Rep.  Gerry Connolly, D-Va., a dedicated public servant and a steadfast advocate for refugees, immigrants and those seeking safety.

Connolly represented Virgina’s 11th Congressional District for 17 years. He was a vocal supporter of humane immigration policies and refugee resettlement. His leadership in introducing the Lady Liberty Act — a bill reaffirming the United States’ commitment to welcoming those fleeing persecution—reflected his belief in the nation’s responsibility to provide refuge.

He also played a key role in advocating for the safe relocation of Afghan allies, supporting those who assisted U.S. troops by pushing for expedited visa processing and additional protections following the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

“Representative Connolly championed the work of welcome and consistently stood with those seeking safety and a better life,” said LSSNCA CEO Kristyn Peck. “During Operation Allies Welcome, his office worked to support thousands of Afghan Special Immigrant Visa applicants—not only those resettling in Virgina, but across the country —partnering with public and private entities to help coordinate their departure and safe passage— embodying the values he advocated for on the House floor. We were fortunate to have his support in our mission to welcome refugees in Northern Virginia, and we honor the legacy he leaves behind.”

LSSNCA extends deepest condolences to his family, colleagues, and constituents. His legacy will continue to guide and inspire the work of welcome for years to come.
