LSSNCA Statement on Halting of Green Card Processing for Refugees and Asylees

Washington, D.C.- Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) strongly opposes the administration’s directive to halt the processing of green cards for refugees and individuals granted asylum in the United States.

This abrupt change affects people who have already undergone extensive vetting and security screenings, often waiting years—whether in the United States or abroad. These families and individuals have proven that they face persecution in their home countries. Many have established their lives here, contributing to our communities, while waiting for the opportunity to gain permanent residency and the stability it brings.

“Simply put, the decision to halt processing green card applications for refugees and asylees does not make sense,” said Kristyn Peck, LSSNCA CEO. “Although the administration claims increased vetting is the reason for the suspension, individuals granted refugee and asylum status have already undergone long and thorough vetting processes by multiple federal law enforcement agencies, sometimes waiting years. They have cleared every hurdle placed before them, are valued members of our communities, and now their permanency is being put into question.”

We urge the administration to reverse course immediately. Families and individuals to whom our government has granted protection should be able to have their green card applications processed, a necessary step in their path to legal permanency. By halting this process, we risk undermining our nation’s values and the trust placed in us by those seeking safety and a new beginning. It is imperative that we uphold our commitment to these individuals who have followed all the rules and reaffirm our dedication to being a beacon of hope and refuge
