Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) mourns the senseless and tragic death of Tyre Nichols and calls for justice in solidarity with the Nichols family, the Memphis community, and all those impacted by this tragic loss. Tyre was a father, loved to skateboard, and was passionate about photography. The video footage released on Friday displayed traumatic and inexcusable use of force by the Memphis Police Department. While the officers involved were fired, and the special police unit disbanded, the pervasiveness of unjust deaths like Tyre’s and innumerable Black and Brown people demonstrate the urgent need for local, state, and federal actors to address the systemic issues with policing and enact institutionally targeted reforms to prevent further injustices. LSSNCA’s vision is an inclusive community where all people thrive - but this only happens when our institutions and systems are designed to recognize the inherent dignity of all humans, ensure fair treatment, and make certain those who do harm are not beyond reproach.
