Yesterday the Biden Administration announced its new policy regarding Venezuelans seeking safety in the United States. Providing humanitarian parole relief to more Venezuelans – up to 24,000 - is a welcome step. However, hinging this support on familial ties in the United States and expanding the use of Title 42 to expel Venezuelans to Mexico in conjunction with the program is a step backward. There shouldn’t be conditions placed on life-saving protection. Since Trump instituted Title 42 and Remain in Mexico, both which were based on thin grounds from the start, we have seen the devastating effects on already vulnerable individuals and families. Linda*, a participant in our CARE for Newcomers program, was living in the U.S. and waiting for her two children to arrive. At the border, one of her sons was expelled under this policy. He lost touch and Linda later found out that he had committed suicide. With the Biden Administration declaring the pandemic “over,” Title 42, an unfair supposed public health policy that separates families, now has even less justifiable grounds for continued use as an immigration policy option.
