LSSNCA Statement on the Migrant Deaths in San Antonio, Texas

Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is heartbroken by the news of the senseless and tragic deaths, and severe physical injury, of at least 50 people who were seeking a safer life who were found in an abandoned tractor-trailer in San Antonio, Texas. Of the severely injured, nearly half a dozen were children whose futures were ahead of them. This is a devasting consequence of unfounded and inhumane policies like Title 42 and Remain in Mexico (MPP). These policies, under the guise of public health, in fact put thousands of human lives at risk. We must not close our doors to those who are fleeing violence and persecution who are seeking the promise of freedom and safety. The stories we’ve heard firsthand from those seeking safety in the United States highlight their desperation – they are facing imminent death in the countries from which they flee. Yet, due to a lack of humane immigration policies, they have no other choice than to take arduous and dangerous journeys, too often subjecting themselves to kidnapping, assault, and separation from their families in the pursuit of safety in America. Seeking asylum is a human right, and we urge the Biden Administration and Congress to take action to repeal harmful immigration policies and pass those that ensure due process and a safe, supportive, and efficient asylum process.
