LSSNCA Statement on Temporary Protected Status for Cameroon

After years of advocacy by the diaspora and with the immigration community, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is relieved the Biden Administration is finally extending lifesaving Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Cameroonians. Long awaited, and hard fought for, this will bring temporary relief to so many individuals who have been living in terror not only in Cameroon, but also here in the United States as they awaited their asylum decisions. LSSNCA has met with many Cameroonians who shared tales of being sent back to Cameroon after seeking safety in the U.S., only to have that appeal for safety be used as an excuse for Cameroonian officers to beat and torture them even more. The U.S. must continue to be a beacon of safety and protection for those escaping persecution and violence, never one to cause more harm. We hope this is just the first step in creating more inclusive welcoming communities for all those fleeing for their lives.
