Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) will award multiple scholarships for the 2022-2023 school year. The Scholarship Fund supports LSSNCA community members seeking to further their education. The Fund provides scholarships to past and current clients of LSSNCA working to improve their lives and build a stronger future. Funds are dedicated to higher education, vocational training, professional credential certifications for those educated outside the U.S., and related education costs (i.e., books and admissions testing). 

Individuals may apply for both scholarships below if they meet the eligibility criteria. Please review the Scholarship FAQs for additional information. 

Scholarship Awards

Bold Journey Scholarships: $18,000 current estimated amount (one or more scholarships)

Consideration for the award will be weighted towards promising applicants who have demonstrated the ability to achieve in the face of adversity. The scholarship will enable them to pursue an undergraduate or graduate education and/or vocational training at an accredited vocational school or 2- or 4-year college.  Applicants must be a resident of the National Capital Area (DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia); and must be an LSSNCA client or former client who wishes to pursue post-secondary, vocational, or technical education. Scholarships may be awarded to one or more applicants.

Elizabeth Kreiser Weisburger Scholarship: Up to $4,800 (current estimated value)

Consideration for the award will be weighted towards a promising applicant who has demonstrated the ability to achieve in the face of adversity. The scholarship will enable them to pursue an undergraduate education at an accredited 2- or 4-year college. No awards will be granted for vocational studies.

The Elizabeth Kreiser Weisburger Scholarship is given in honor of the life and work of Dr. Weisburger. Applicants for the Weisburger scholarship must be a client of a Lutheran Social Ministry organization in the ELCA Metropolitan Washington, DC Synod. These organizations include:

  • Community Family Life Services
  • Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area, Inc.
  • N Street Village
  • National Lutheran Communities and Services
  • New Course Restaurant and Catering
  • Southeast Ministry
  • Housing Up

Application Process

The application deadline for the 2022-23 academic year was March 25, 2022. Thank you to all who submitted their applications for the Bold Journey and Weisburger Scholarships. All are currently under review and award notifications will be sent no later than Thursday, May 5th.
