Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is pleased by the Biden Administration's announcement that the United States will welcome 100,000 Ukrainians and others fleeing Russian violence. While we are grateful this allows Eastern Europeans to seek safety in the United States, unfortunately less than 7,000 forcibly displaced individuals from around the world were granted the same access this year. We implore the Administration to diligently review immigration mechanisms and options so we do not leave another group stuck in immigration legal limbo like Afghan nationals who were granted humanitarian parole status. We also support the Administration’s proposed expediting and streamlining of the resettlement for Ukrainians. The proposed focus on especially vulnerable Ukrainians, such as the LGBTQIA+ community, activists, and journalists, is critical to ensure their safety and protection, as is the expediting of family reunifications. LSSNCA continues to welcome the largest number of evacuated Afghans on the East Coast since this summer, and we are preparing to welcome as many Ukrainian refugees, along with refugees from around the world, who come seeking safety, stability, and community in the Greater Washington D.C. area.
