Statement Concerning the U.S. Expulsion of Haitians Prior to Asylum

“The actions taken by the United States to expel Haitians before they have the opportunity to seek asylum betray our country’s origins as a beacon of hope for those seeking refuge and protection and are a violation of our commitment to allow persons to seek asylum as defined in the United Nations 1951 Refugee Convention and its 1967 Protocol of which the United States is a signatory. Instead of being welcomed into our country, Haitians fleeing political instability and conflict were met with violence, attacks, and the largest mass expulsion in our country’s history. Migrants from any country seeking asylum in the United States should not be fearful of the behavior of American government agencies. It is our responsibility to uphold our international commitments, honor our immigration laws, and show respect to all who seek safety and freedom in our country.” -Kristyn Peck, LSSNCA CEO
