LSSNCA Welcomes Paul Monteiro to Its Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. — Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area (LSSNCA) is pleased to announce the appointment of Paul Monteiro to its board of directors. A longtime public servant and civic leader, Monteiro brings extensive experience across federal, state, and local government, higher education, and community partnerships to LSSNCA’s work with refugees, immigrants, children, and families across the Washington metropolitan area.

“We are honored to welcome Paul Monteiro to LSSNCA’s board of directors,” said Kristyn Peck, LSSNCA CEO. “Paul has built a career at the intersection of public service, civic engagement, and community leadership. His experience and perspective will help strengthen our work at a pivotal time as we help refugees, immigrants, children, and families build lives rooted in safety, stability, opportunity, and dignity.”

“As a son of immigrants, I am honored to join an organization that helps families find safety, opportunity, and a sense of belonging,” said Monteiro. “I look forward to working with my fellow board members and the LSSNCA team to strengthen the services and partnerships that help our communities thrive.”

Monteiro serves as vice president of government relations and community affairs at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He previously served as Maryland’s inaugural secretary of the Department of Service and Civic Innovation, where he led the launch of the Maryland Corps and Service Year Option program. LSSNCA was one of the first organizations to participate in the program.

In 2022, the U.S. Senate confirmed Monteiro as director of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service. He also served as chief of staff to the president and assistant vice president of external affairs at Howard University, and as an at-large member of the Prince George’s County Board of Education.

Monteiro joined the White House Office of Public Engagement as an associate director in 2009. In 2014, President Barack Obama appointed him director of AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to America, known as VISTA.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Maryland, a law degree from Howard University School of Law, and an honorary doctorate from Loyola University Maryland.
