Recently, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area’s (LSSNCA) legal team received an urgent voicemail from a domestic violence shelter in the DMV.
A mother and her four-year-old child had recently relocated to the area after escaping a dangerous domestic violence situation. The shelter provided temporary safety and support; however the mother and child remained in an incredibly vulnerable position. The shelter staff discovered on a Thursday that the child had been issued a notice to appear in immigration court the next Monday. Already coping with trauma, displacement, and uncertainty, the family was suddenly forced to navigate the complexities of the United States immigration system. What began as a search for safety quickly became a legal emergency.
