“I feel strongly about loving our neighbors. Loving others can take many forms, and it’s not always easy. But at the very least, we can strive to ‘do no harm.’”
That’s how Rafael*, a dedicated LSSNCA volunteer since 2022, explained why he lends his time and expertise to support the work of welcome with LSSNCA. As a recruiter with years of experience, Rafael, helps forcibly displaced individuals navigate one of their biggest challenges: securing employment that matches their skills.
This giving season, we’re highlighting volunteers like Rafael, whose commitment transforms lives and communities.
For Rafael, volunteering is deeply rooted in his faith and worldview and is a way to put his professional skills and personal passion to meaningful use. “When I saw how many newcomers struggled to secure jobs that matched their skills and experience, I knew I could help,” he says. “When refugees arrive here, many are professionals with impressive qualifications, but they often end up underemployed. I knew I could help change that.”
Building Bridges, One Job at a Time
Rafael’s first mentee was Anwar*, an Afghan individual with a master’s degree and extensive professional experience. Despite submitting hundreds of job applications, Anwar struggled to secure interviews and drove for Uber to support his family. Rafael worked tirelessly with him on résumé writing, interview preparation, and networking. After more than a year, Anwar finally landed a job in his professional field —marking the beginning of a new chapter for him and his family.
“Last week, he invited me to his home for dinner with his family,” Rafael recalls. “It was such a joy. It’s moments like these that remind me why I do this work.”
Since 2022, Rafael has mentored 38 LSSNCA program participants, helping many secure roles that fit their skills and ambitions. He’s celebrated their victories, such as a woman who was able to get into a graduate school in the United States and another who transitioned into a role that fit her expertise in logistics and program management. But he’s also witnessed the challenges, as some participants face barriers that require ongoing advocacy and persistence.
“I’ve reached out to hundreds of companies and individuals to follow up on their applications,” he says. “Sometimes, the lack of response can be profoundly disappointing. But I refuse to give up because I believe in their potential.”
For Rafael, volunteering is more than a personal mission - it’s a call to action. “Helping others builds empathy and reminds us that we all need support at some point in our lives,” he explains. “It’s also an opportunity for me to learn from the resilience, determination, and contributions of the people I work with.”
