State of Welcome

What’s New?

The administration will end Temporary Protected Status for Afghans and Cameroonians which will result in  thousands of individuals losing work authorization and protection from deportation as soon as next month. LSSNCA is deeply concerned and urges the administration to reverse course. Read our statement

What Else?

A few litigation updates.

First, a federal judge has blocked the administration’s mass termination of lawful status and work authorization for Cuban, Haitian, Nicaraguan, and Venezuelan parolees (Svitlana Doe v. Noem). The judge’s ruling states that termination without individual review “undermines the rule of law.”

In Pacito v. Trump, the judge has ordered the administration and plaintiffs to submit a plan for the U.S. government to restart resettlement for refugees approved to travel to the United States before January 20 by April 18.

  • Lawmakers are supporting refugees. At a town hall, Senator Grassley of Iowa said he would “welcome refugees” when asked about the administration’s treatment of asylum seekers and refugees. In the House, over 40 representatives urged the State Department to restart the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP). This letter comes ahead of a joint report due to the President on USRAP from the Secretaries of State and Homeland Security.

Lastly, in J.G.G. v. Trump, the judge overseeing the case has threatened to open a contempt investigation on whether the administration ignored an order to return individuals removed without due process to a notorious mega-prison in El Salvador.
