Due to an overwhelming community response following our town hall on August 26, we have temporarily suspended our home set up interest form. If you have already signed up, please wait to hear from our team about a home setup opportunity for a newly arrived refugee family. We thank you for your support, patience, and understanding.
At this time, we are looking for groups to mobilize quickly and organize home setups for newly arriving Afghan Allies! Team up with your friends, family, congregation, or community group to collect furniture and donations and set these up in a family’s new home. This is a special way to welcome Afghan refugee families to the DMV. Here is the list of required items as part of the home setup and optional “next level needs”.
Become a Good Neighbor Partner
If your team organizes a home setup, we consider you a “Level 3” GNP! From learning a new language to navigating a new community, the first few months in the United States are often the most intensive for refugees and immigrants. To ease this transition and provide an extra layer of care and support, we match families with local congregations and groups called Good Neighbor Partners (GNPs). These partners sponsor a refugee family in many practical and valuable ways including housing, friendship, job assistance, English language learning, and cross-cultural mentoring.
In addition to setting up an apartment for a new refugee family, Good Neighbor Partners (GNPs) can choose a combination of support and resources to provide a family for up to 6 months or 1 year. Since the start of this refugee co-sponsorship program, GNPs have organized countless apartment setups and supported over 30 families in their journey towards adjustment and self-sufficiency.
Please note: We are temporarily pausing onboarding for Level 1 and 2 GNPs as home setups are an immediate need. If your group or congregation is interested in becoming a GNP at a later time, feel free to fill out this form and we will follow up with you in the coming weeks.
