Housing Logistics Intern

Roles and Responsibilities
• Conducting housing outreach/research.
• Mediating between landlords and refugees/asylees.
• Working closely with case managers to secure housing for newly arrived refugees.
• Possibly helping set up apartments for newly arrived refugees.

Qualifications
• Must speak, read, and write English fluently and at a university level.
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other Windows applications and have experience with Internet research and databases.
• Must have excellent organizational, time-management, follow-up, interpersonal, and administrative skills.
• Must have excellent telephone manner, research and writing skills, attention to detail.
• Must be capable of working in a fast-paced, multicultural office environment, take initiative, and be able to handle multiple assignments at once and meet deadlines.
• Commitment to the human rights and general welfare of asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants.

DESIRED, BUT NOT REQUIRED
• Strong candidates will have previous internship experience in non-governmental or inter-governmental organizations.
• Strong candidates will be willing to drive.
• Strong candidates will be fluent in a second language in addition to English. Preference will be given to speakers of: Arabic, Farsi/Dari, Burmese, Karen, Nepali, Spanish, Somali, French, Turkish, and Russian.

This is for the Fall and Winter/Spring Semester/Quarter

Roles and Responsibilities
• Coordinate with staff to determine focus areas for employment initiatives
• Participate in and conduct information sessions, workshops and select programs addressing client needs
• Help identify, cultivate and maintain relationships/partnerships with service providers and employers
• Assist in maintaining client and employer information database
• Assist with Job Coach & Refugee and Asylee Mentoring Programs
• Assist clients in self-sufficiency planning
• Assist in maintain case management files
• Assist in interviewing clients for resume and cover letters development
• Assist in developing resumes and cover letters
• Coordinate client’s initial transportation needs to interviews, drug testing, and worksites
• Research potential operational partnerships with like-minded organizations
• Research grant opportunities
• Prepare written reports, briefing material, and proposal summaries
• Update and analyze refugee arrival statistics
• Provide general administrative support to staff
• Work on special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications
• Strong belief in early employment as key to a newcomers’ ability to become truly independent in American society
• Demonstrated interest and experience with immigrant or refugee issues
• Experience working in a multicultural context
• Intermediate to advanced computer skills
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Attention to detail and accuracy
• Must be a self-starter; able to work independently and as a team member
• Ability to multi-task, work in fast-paced environment and process unexpected tasks and deadlines
• High-levels of discretion and maturity in dealing with confidential information
• Diligent about communicating with, taking direction from, and providing client feedback to RIS team
• Resourceful and patient when dealing with people and situational problems
• A great sense of humor

To be considered as a applicant a writing sample is required. One of the following documents can be submitted: Writing samples of 1-3 pages; Term paper excerpts are OK, but please do not submit long papers.
